You are a midwife, assisting at someone else’s birth. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say; ‘We did it ourselves!
— The Tao Te Ching

Our philosophy is based on 4 ideas:

The WomanWise philosophy promotes woman and family centered care, believing that honest, ongoing communication between mother and midwife is at the center of creating happy, healthy birth experiences. We use an individualized approach to care during the childbearing year based on the concept of informed choice, empowering each woman to confidently make the decisions that are right for her and her family. We believe that every woman deserves the right to choose where, how, and with whom they give birth.

We trust in the process of birth and in each woman’s instinctual ability to find her own unique path to birth.

Family-Centered Care

We see pregnancy and birth as a time for growth in family relationships and we encourage partners & siblings to be as present  and involved in the birth process as they wish. We value the importance of that uninterrupted first ‘Golden Hour’ so we encourage continuous contact between you and your baby; this golden hour has been shown to improve self-confidence in breastfeeding, parenting, and to strengthen your new family’s bond.

Individualized Care for Each Woman

We believe that there is no one “right” path to healthy pregnancy and birth for all women; given support, resources and encouragement, each woman will find what works for her. For more on what informed choice means to us, visit our FAQ page

Safety of Midwifery Care

Birth is a natural event. With a healthy lifestyle and good prenatal care, there is seldom a need for women to be hospitalized to give birth. Midwives have an excellent safety record,  with numerous studies associating midwifery care with excellent outcomes. You can find links to related  studies in our Resources section.

Working with WomanWise

Your visits with WomanWise are an unhurried hour; giving us time to get to know one another. During each visit you will be encouraged to share your life with us, your ups as well as your downs, and given ample time to ask us all your questions. If we don’t readily have the answers, we will actively seek them out while directing you to the resources that you need.  During that hour we will check your baby’s growth, your continued good health, and grow our relationship. What we are building at each visit is a bridge of trust, so important for the journey you and your family are on.

After your first visit to Karen’s office, you will no longer be a guest, and are encouraged to make yourself at home, make a cup of tea, have a nourishing snack, put your feet up and relax…

We see our clients at our office every four weeks until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks when we will have a home visit in your home, and then weekly in the office until you have your baby.  Group prenatals are offered 2 -3 times during your pregnancy, around 20, 24 and 34 weeks; these gatherings are about building community, sharing care, stories, and fellowship, with a potluck lunch at the end. After your birth we return to your house at least 2-3 times and you come see us at the office for your six week visit. We remain on call for visits at your home for 2 weeks after your birth and encourage you to call or text without hesitation with any concern; that’s what we are here for!
